12 Weeks SURE workshop at AMU under G-20 Concludes

Aligarh, April 27: The 12 weeks Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship (SURE) workshop organised by the Department of Commerce, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in collaboration with Bauer College of Business, University of Houston, USA provided an educational and networking platform and handholding to the participants that facilitated a value-added partnership between students, industry experts, and potential entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, including engineering and commerce students, struggling and small-level entrepreneurs, women from under-resourced communities and anyone who wanted to learn the business. The workshop was organised under the G-20 programme.

The Chief Guest of the valedictory session Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, AMU Vice Chancellor said “with India becoming the most populated country of the world, and considering the employment generation by MSMEs, entrepreneurship is the key to future growth, development and progress of the nation. SURE programme is playing a significant role in supporting and nurturing new entrepreneurs”.

Prof Gulrez pointed out that AMU is a public institution serving the nation with dedication. “AMU has adopted five villages where various departments of the university raise awareness on issues of public concern”, he added.

The Guest of Honour Smt. Meenu Rana, ADM, F & R, Aligarh said Entrepreneurship programmes provide an opportunity to learn new skills and upgrade the knowledge. Exhorting the participants she said “identifying strong points and up-skilling is the key to progress and success. You should try to establish you own enterprise, thus boosting the economy and increasing the GDP of the country”.  

Prof. Mohsin Khan, Chairman of the workshop and Finance Officer, AMU said entrepreneurship is often cited as a significant engine of economic growth and development. “In an emerging society like India, whose population now stands higher than China and the unemployment rate is at the rate of 7.45%, entrepreneurship is the only solution. The government of India is taking all important steps in this direction and encourages the start-up environment through various schemes like Make in India, Startup India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan”, he remarked. He further said, the G20 summit also intends to push up startup culture and build an inclusive ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship in India.

Prof. Asiya Chaudhary, Convener and Director, SURE workshop said that various sessions were conducted on costing & accounting, banking, DIC, marketing, legal, etc. Some remarkable outcomes of the workshop were that several participants were ready with their Startups, registered with their trademarks and GST, initiated paperwork and pitched in with bankers, DIC, buyers & sellers.

Prof Asiya said a group of 4 engineering students who already had developed educational software are ready to launch their startup soon after learning from SURE, while Mrs. Sanjeeda Begum and Ms. Ulfat are soon launching coaching centers for stitching & tailoring and science & Mathematics classes, respectively. They benefited the most from networking and hand-holding sessions.

Similarly Mr. Abdur Rehman is scaling up his glass business while Ms. Naureen and Huda got pitched in for their eco-friendly paper bag business.

After getting trained in the SURE workshop Ms. Iqra and Ms. Adeena initiated the opening of their fashion coaching institute, while Ms. Farah is midway through establishing a gym soon after the workshop.

Dean, Faculty of Commerce Prof. Mohd. Nasir Zameer Qureshi said that the post pandemic economic scenario experienced slowdown or complete business shut down, increased unemployment, and low tax collection etc. “In this backdrop the concept of micro entrepreneurship assumes more significance as MSMEs account for the majority of business worldwide and are an important contributor to job creation and global economic development”, he added.

Prof S.M. Imamul Haque chairman department of commerce delivered the welcome address.

Participants of the workshop Ms. Nazish and Mr. Divyansh Shandilya shared their experiences.

Dr. Anwar Ahmad proposed the vote of thanks. Mr. Mushahid Ali Shamsi and Mr. Mohd. Abdullah conducted the programme.
